How do I know if I qualify to be a mentor?

Mentors in the community are users who've completed enough of their own work that they have something to offer — not credentialed therapists. The bar is intentionally moderate: too high and we have no mentors; too low and the matching breaks.

What we actually require

  • Account age ≥ 30 days. Filters out drive-by accounts.
  • Personality assessment completed. Big Five at minimum so we can match by trait similarity.
  • At least 3 weeks of activity (logged habits, completed exercises, journal entries, or scale check-ins). Demonstrates ongoing engagement.
  • Clean moderation history. No active warnings or moderation strikes in the last 90 days.
  • Trust level: regular or higher. This is awarded automatically based on community participation (helpful comments, completed challenges, etc.).

All of this is checked when you go to Profile → Mentor settings → "Apply to be a mentor."

What the app DOESN'T require

  • A clinical or therapy credential
  • A certain personality type
  • A certain assessment score
  • Personal disclosure of your own struggles

This is peer support, not therapy. Mentors are explicitly told (and reminded in the matching screen) that they're not substitutes for clinicians and shouldn't pretend to be.

What being a mentor actually involves

When matched, you and the mentee see each other's public profile + assessment summary. You can:

  • Send DMs (rate-limited)
  • Co-track a habit (you'll see each other's streak)
  • Complete a partnership-style challenge together
  • Optionally: have a video call (we don't host this — you'd use any tool you both pick)

You can end a mentorship at any time, no explanation needed. Same for the mentee.

Things to avoid as a mentor

  • Diagnosing. Don't tell the mentee they "have depression" or "definitely have ADHD." Even if you're right, that's a clinician's call.
  • Prescribing. Don't recommend specific medications, dosages, or supplements.
  • Crisis intervention. If a mentee is in immediate danger, surface the Crisis Resources page, then disengage. You're not first responder.
  • Over-disclosure of your own trauma. Sharing what worked for you is fine; using the mentee as your therapist is not.

How matching works

We use trait similarity (Big Five cosine distance), MBTI-temperament compatibility, and shared goals. We don't match on age, gender, or location.

If you don't get matched immediately, that's usually because there are no mentees actively requesting in your trait neighborhood. Your application stays active.

Stepping back

Profile → Mentor settings → "Pause" or "Withdraw." Either is reversible.
